Our Founder—John K. Sheffield
John K. Sheffield's association with the pecan industry began in 1971. He started out buying and selling pecans at the wholesale level. In 1973, he became partners with Ronald Webb of Madison County, FL. This enabled him to more than double his buying area and capacity. In 1974, he started a commercial spraying business that continued until 1990, and in 1976, he began a commercial shaking business. In the fall of 1978, John purchased a warehouse in Madison, FL, and in early 1979, he purchased the Webb interest and formed Sheffield PECAN COMPANY, LLC.
A Growing Concern
Through various leases and services, Sheffield PECAN COMPANY, LLC continued to grow and expand. In 1982, we purchased a Monticello, FL, warehouse to complement the Madison County warehouse operation. In September of 1984, John represented Florida on the SUSTA (Southern United States Trade Association) team.
Together, the team explored the expansion of the foreign market, visiting buyers and importers in London, Hamburg, and Utrecht. Their product was exhibited at international food shows throughout Europe, and that year, they began exporting to France. In 1984, we developed a bag film with a company logo and built a shelled-meats market approaching half-a-million dollars annually. In 1988, John was elected president of the Florida Pecan Growers Association.
Florida's First Online Agribusiness
In 1994, Sheffield PECAN COMPANY, LLC went high-tech and became the first agribusiness in Florida on the Internet. We also developed a mail-order business and gained several large fundraising customers. We plan to expand this segment by dealing with various schools, churches, and civic organizations throughout the country.
